Owasco Nursery Willow Planting Event
May 21 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
This in-person event is part of Lake Friendly Living Awareness Month and is sponsored by Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council, Owasco Watershed Lake Association, and SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry.
A riparian forest buffer is an area adjacent to a stream, lake, or wetland that contains a combination of trees, shrubs, and/or other perennial plants and is managed to provide conservation benefits. Conservation benefits of riparian buffers include carbon sequestration for reducing the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, and the settling of sediments and nutrients that might otherwise discharge into waterways. In partnership with SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry and the Owasco Watershed Lake Association, the Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council is hosting this volunteer community planting event to develop a shrub willow nursery in a vacant lot in the Town of Owasco. The nursery will act as a long-term source of shrub willow for the future installation of riparian buffers within the Owasco Lake watershed.
