Home and Garden Practices to Help Protect our Lake and Land

May 7, 2022 @ 7:00 am - 9:00 am EDT

This event is part of Lake Friendly Living Awareness Month and is sponsored by Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association.

The Seneca Lake watershed has experienced heavy precipitation resulting in serious run-off and flooding conditions. These conditions impact the water quality of Seneca lake by carrying excessive nutrients and pollutants into the lake. These pollutants combined with warmer lake temperatures disrupt the quality of the drinking water and lake ecosystems.

The event, led by Maura Toole and Martha Macinski, will start inside with a presentation and discussion about simple practices that residents can adopt to help minimize runoff and pollutant contamination. Participants will then move outside to the community garden and learn hands-on techniques for native landscaping and sustainable gardening for healthy eating.

Maura Toole:

Maura lives in Lodi, NY and is a volunteer with the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association and the Lodi Climate Smart Community Taskforce. Maura recently completed the Cornell Cooperative Extension Climate Steward course and is actively involved in projects to build climate resiliency.

Martha lives in Lodi, NY and leads the Lodi Community Garden efforts to grow food for the Lodi food pantry and engage residents in sustainable gardening practices.
