SUMMARY:Water and Wildlife Summer Camp Week 1: Macroinvertebrates
DESCRIPTION:Where: Onanda Park\, 4965 County Road 16\, Canandaigua NY \nWhen: August 14-18th\, M-F\, 9 AM- 1 PM \nThis first week of camp is for 6th-8th graders. \nWeek 1 of camp with consist of activities analyzing the invertebrates of the Canandaigua Lake watershed. Campers will learn about the food webs in the Canandaigua area and how invasives are upsetting the balance. Collect and analyze the insect larvae and other invertebrates in the stream beds. The lessons will be led by local college professionals and intermixed with games that simulate the instructional lessons. There will be lots of hiking\, but the week will culminate in a bus ride around the lake to collect water samples and invertebrates for analysis. \nIn 2023\, an additional week of camp will be offered with a different focus. SUMMARY:History of Wildlife Native to the Canandaigua Lake Area
DESCRIPTION:How do changes in forest cover and hunting patterns in our watershed affect the absence or presence of predators like wolves\, coyotes\, and cougars?\n\nJoin CLWA at FLCC in the Stage 14 presentation room on August 14th from 7:00-8:00 PM for a talk on the history of wildlife native to the Canandaigua Lake area to find out! \nBoth adults and children\, ages 10 and up\, who love animals\, will enjoy this evening presentation. DEC expert\, Mike Palermo\, will consider MINK…MOOSE…and the MOUNTAIN LION\, and a host of other animals\, explaining their interactions with humans in our area. \nLight refreshments will be served. \nBio: \nMike Palermo is a Wildlife Biologist for the NYS DEC and works of the Region 8 headquarters in Avon. He has been with the agency for 11 years and his primary focus is managing forest habitats on state-owned Wildlife Management Areas. Mike holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in wildlife conservation from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. DESCRIPTION:Where: Onanda Park\, 4965 County Road 16\, Canandaigua NY \nWhen: August 21-25th\, M-F\, 9 AM- 1 PM \nThis second week of camp is for 8th graders or for those who have completed the first week of camp. \n\n\nThis week of camp will consist of activities analyzing the vertebrates in the Canandaigua Lake watershed. Local college professionals will lead campers through the exploration of the fish and amphibians that are commonly found in the area. Campers will learn how to complete population estimates via mark and recapture as well as learn about fish shocking\, fishing techniques and fly tying. There will also be a field trip related to these activities. Activity TBD. \n\n\n \nIn 2023\, an additional week of camp will be offered with a different focus.
