SUMMARY:Home and Garden Practices to Help Protect our Lake and Land
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of Lake Friendly Living Awareness Month and is sponsored by Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association. \nThe Seneca Lake watershed has experienced heavy precipitation resulting in serious run-off and flooding conditions. These conditions impact the water quality of Seneca lake by carrying excessive nutrients and pollutants into the lake. These pollutants combined with warmer lake temperatures disrupt the quality of the drinking water and lake ecosystems. \nThe event\, led by Maura Toole and Martha Macinski\, will start inside with a presentation and discussion about simple practices that residents can adopt to help minimize runoff and pollutant contamination. Participants will then move outside to the community garden and learn hands-on techniques for native landscaping and sustainable gardening for healthy eating. \n  \nMaura Toole: \nMaura lives in Lodi\, NY and is a volunteer with the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association and the Lodi Climate Smart Community Taskforce. Maura recently completed the Cornell Cooperative Extension Climate Steward course and is actively involved in projects to build climate resiliency. \n  \nMartha (Marti) Macinski: \nMartha lives in Lodi\, NY and leads the Lodi Community Garden efforts to grow food for the Lodi food pantry and engage residents in sustainable gardening practices. \nWhen: Saturday\, May 7th from 11AM – 1PM \nWhere: Lodi Whittier Library 8484 S. Main Street\, Lodi\, NY 14860 \nFor more information visit: WWW.FLRWA.ORG/LAKE-FRIENDLY-LIVING \n  \nRegister for this in person event at the link below: \nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfgAqHb-OLZp6jxHTmgFkglku28hmofQ-Tjf_dtX9Sugp1W9A/viewform

DESCRIPTION:3rd Grade Lesson: \nStudents will be introduced to what a watershed is and learn about how it functions by viewing a few different models of one. The majority of the lesson is focused on the use of the EnviroScape watershed model in order to demonstrate how storm water runoff carries non-point source pollutants through the watershed to a pond\, lake\, river\, bay\, or ocean. Best management practices to prevent this type of pollution is then discussed.

It includes relevant terminology and a conservation/protection message about one of Earth’s most valuable and finite resources. \n5th Grade Lesson: \nStudents will learn about the different ways humans use the land and the potential impacts these uses can have on water quality. \n

SUMMARY:Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Survey Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) is an invasive forest pest that is threatening hemlock trees across the Finger Lakes region. HWA poses a significant threat to the structure of our watershed gullies\, the beauty of our lakeside properties\, and ultimately\, our water quality. \nMapping the occurrence of HWA is of critical importance as we develop future HWA management efforts. You can help by learning to identify hemlocks and HWA\, and reporting your findings using iMapInvasives. \nJoin us for an HWA Survey Training and Hike on Sunday\, February 27th at 1:00 PM at Cumming Nature Center in Naples\, NY  to learn more about this invasive and what you can do to help. \nRegistration is required: https://forms.gle/Mm3KmBh6x5VdVQSTA \nLeading up to the event\, we ask that you make an iMapInvasives account by visiting https://www.imapinvasives.org/ on a desktop or laptop computer. It will also be helpful to download the iMapInvasives app on your smartphone device. \n*Masks will be required at this event*
