You’ll have the opportunity to learn directly from an invasive species expert on what SLF is\, why it’s a threat\, and how you can help the Finger Lakes by stopping this bug. \nMatt Gallo is the Terrestrial Invasive Species Outreach Coordinator for the Finger Lakes PRISM\, where he is working on invasive species outreach and education programs. Stream water quality directly impacts the ecology and resiliency in the watershed. DESCRIPTION:Into the Woods with Marty Dodge: Management Options for Variety of Forest Types  \n*EVENT SOLD OUT* \n*Register for Marty’s second date on  5/20/22\, 1:00-3:00 pm* \nMarty Dodge\, as our teacher and guide\, will bring participants to observe a number of different forest stands that occur on his land\, and on the land now owned by the Finger Lakes Land Trust that he has managed for 25 years. There are pole stands of red maple and ash that regenerated from sheep pasture\, a red pine stand that he has thinned\, several stands of red oak poles that he has been thinning for 25 years\, and several stands of mature oak hickory forest that have sustained several rounds of commercial cutting will serve to illustrate both needed management and the effects of ongoing forest practices. \nMarty Dodge\, born in New Haven\, CT in 1942 dedicated his childhood to outdoor activities. He earned a BA in Chemistry from Colby College in Waterville\, Maine in 1965. While at Colby he served as president of the Outing Club for two years\, started the Woodsmen’s’ Team at Colby and served as captain and coach of the team for four years. Marty served as a tripping counselor for a boy’s camp in Belgrade\, Maine for the four summers he attended Colby. He enrolled in the United States Coast Guard Officer Training program in Yorktown\, VA and assumed duties as a deck watch officer aboard the USCG Cutter Sedge in Cordova\, Alaska from 1967 through 1970. Marty earned a Master of Forestry degree from Utah State University in 1972. For two summers while in graduate school\, Marty worked for the Cordova District of the US Forest Service maintaining and building cabins and trails in the Chugach National Forest. \nMarty\, now retired\, served as a Professor of Natural Resources at Finger Lakes Community College for 39 years. In 1987\, he conducted his first month long credit bearing travel ecology course through Alaskan Wilderness areas. From 1989 through 2010 he led thirteen more groups of college students into Alaskan National Parks and Forests. For as many as three months through the summers of 2011 to 2014\, Marty designed and supervised the construction of seven buildings a mile south of Wiseman\, Alaska; one of which will serve as a retirement getaway for him in the years to come. \nThroughout his college career\, Marty delivered Alaska presentations to more than one hundred civic groups and has produced dozens of Alaska related video programs\, the latest of which can be viewed on YouTube. SUMMARY:Home and Garden Practices to Help Protect our Lake and Land
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of Lake Friendly Living Awareness Month and is sponsored by Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association. \nThe Seneca Lake watershed has experienced heavy precipitation resulting in serious run-off and flooding conditions. These conditions impact the water quality of Seneca lake by carrying excessive nutrients and pollutants into the lake. These pollutants combined with warmer lake temperatures disrupt the quality of the drinking water and lake ecosystems. \nThe event\, led by Maura Toole and Martha Macinski\, will start inside with a presentation and discussion about simple practices that residents can adopt to help minimize runoff and pollutant contamination. Participants will then move outside to the community garden and learn hands-on techniques for native landscaping and sustainable gardening for healthy eating. \n  \nMaura Toole: \nMaura lives in Lodi\, NY and is a volunteer with the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association and the Lodi Climate Smart Community Taskforce. Specific focus will be on the consequences and solutions for the Finger Lakes basin and what individuals can do to improve their climate footprint. Resources specific to the Finger Lakes area will be provided.
