Local college professionals will lead campers through the exploration of the fish and amphibians that are commonly found in the area. Campers will learn how to complete population estimates via mark and recapture as well as learn about fish shocking\, fishing techniques and fly tying. He has been with the agency for 11 years and his primary focus is managing forest habitats on state-owned Wildlife Management Areas. Mike holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in wildlife conservation from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. There will be lots of hiking\, but the week will culminate in a bus ride around the lake to collect water samples and invertebrates for analysis. \nIn 2023\, an additional week of camp will be offered with a different focus. It’s a nighttime experience where you will view the lake floor while paddling under the stars. \nAttendees will gather on the west side of Kershaw Park near the kayak launch and be provided with a paddleboard\, kayak or canoe\, a PFD (personal floatation device) and instruction from a Guide from Canandaigua Sailboard. \nPlease note: You must be 12 years old or older in order to pilot our rental equipment. Any adult reserving rental equipment who wishes to take a child under 12 years old along\, will be given a free PFD for their child to ride on the same equipment. \n*This event is limited to 20 people. Pete Austerman\, DEC expert\, will share his knowledge on the varieties of fish in Canandaigua Lake\, where the fish are and why\, and how to catch them. Information on the fish varieties in Canandaigua will be based on most recent sampling in the lake (2017 for perch\, bass\, sunfish; 2021 for lake trout and forage fish). Angler diary information on lake trout will also be shared. \nBio: \nPete has been an Aquatic Biologist in the NYSDEC Region 8 Fisheries Unit since 2006. Pete is originally from Penn Yan and grew up fishing in many of the lakes and streams in the Finger Lakes region. DESCRIPTION:*EVENT SOLD OUT* \nJoin the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association\, the Ontario County Soil & Water Conservation District and the Naples Brewing Company for a rain barrel workshop. We will start with a short presentation on healthy lake tips and will follow with a demo on how to build your barrel. We will then help you build your own 55 gallon rain barrel. \nInstalling a rain barrel is an easy way to protect our environment and save money. A rain barrel collects & stores rainwater from your roof that would otherwise be lost to runoff & diverted to storm drains or streams. The water from your barrel can be used for watering gardens & lawns\, cleaning outdoor furniture\, & the list goes on. \nCost is $30 per barrel. This presentation will examine the history of their use\, review the scientific literature for their environmental impacts\, and describe the ongoing local tributary sampling program established by the presenter and his student volunteers at Finger Lakes Community College. Data for Canandaigua Lake tributary streams will be highlighted\, including a stressed stream segment analysis for Cook’s Point stream.  \nAfter Bruce’s talk\, Kevin Olvany\, Watershed Program Manager for the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Council\, will discuss the best management practices that several area municipalities will be implementing to help minimize the impacts of de-icing agents on our local waterways.   \nPresented by: Dr. Bruce Gilman  \nDr. Bruce Gilman has recently retired from the Department of Environmental Conservation and Horticulture at Finger Lakes Community College where he taught for 42 years. His teaching expertise included aquatic ecology\, field botany\, glacial geology\, agronomy and environmental science. During his tenure at the college\, Bruce was the Director of the Environmental Studies Program as well as Director of the college’s Muller Field Station located in the southern Honeoye Valley. Dr. Gilman received his PhD in Ecology from the College of Environmental Science and Forestry\, Syracuse NY.

Scott will blend his career experiences to describe the discovery of the first steeled hulled\, screw driven steamboat on Canandaigua Lake. Using historic records\, aerial photography\, underwater photos and video\, the audience will learn about the shipwreck Seneca Chief\, its interesting discovery\, and its significance in Canandaigua Lake history. \n  \nScott C. Hill \nPresenter Scott Hill is a retired captain of the Rochester Police Department and commander of the police Scuba Squad. Scott was also the Senior VP of Operations for Eagleview/Pictometry\, a Rochester based aerial imaging company. \nPrior to joining Pictometry\, he worked in law enforcement\, serving as Captain and the commanding officer of a large\, high crime precinct in Rochester\, New York. As commanding officer of the Research and Evaluation Section\, he directed the development of the first digital mug shot system for law enforcement in the nation. Hill served as the commanding officer of the department’s Scuba Squad. Hill is an accomplished photographer with expertise in aerial\, land\, and underwater photography. DESCRIPTION:The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association (CLWA) is opening a new location in the heart of downtown Canandaigua to expand our efforts to provide education\, conduct scientific research\, and advocate for public policies to protect the health of our lake. \nPlease join us on September 8\, 2022\, at 5:00 PM\, when we will celebrate our new office at 144 Mill Street with a showcase of our activities and say thank you to our supporters\, donors\, and members. \nWe depend on dedicated staff and a working board of directors who collaborate with numerous conservation partner organizations and the 14 municipalities that surround the lake while hundreds of volunteers give their time to important initiatives\, from monitoring water quality to scouting for invasive species to providing office support. \nOpening our new center is an important and exciting milestone as CLWA moves into a new era of preserving\, protecting\, and restoring Canandaigua Lake. \nWe hope to see you there! \nRegister at the link below: \nhttp://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?oeidk=a07ej9mzz9l25b57ce5&llr=eovkd8kab
