Attendees will be given the opportunity to participate in a paddleboard lesson onshore to learn the ropes\, then will be given time to roam the waves at their own leisure to explore the beautiful waters of Canandaigua Lake on their own Stand Up Paddleboard. \nAttendees will be provided with a paddleboard\, paddle\, a PFD (personal floatation device) and instruction from a Guide from Canandaigua Sailboard. This event is best suited for kids ages 6 and up\, but an onshore water quality activity will also be available for younger participants. We will start with a short presentation on healthy lake tips and will follow with a demo on how to build your barrel. We will then help you build your own 55 gallon rain barrel. \nInstalling a rain barrel is an easy way to protect our environment and save money. A rain barrel collects & stores rainwater from your roof that would otherwise be lost to runoff & diverted to storm drains or streams. The water from your barrel can be used for watering gardens & lawns\, cleaning outdoor furniture\, & the list goes on. \nCost is $30 per barrel. SUMMARY:Water Chestnut Pull at High Tor
DESCRIPTION:Join the Finger Lakes Institute and CLWA for a water chestnut pull in the West River on July 6th at 9:00 am. \nWater chestnut is a floating-leaved\, annual aquatic plant that was found in the West River in 2014. Populations of this plant can form very dense mats of interlocking rosettes\, shading out the water column and suppressing most other aquatic plant growth in the area. DESCRIPTION:*Rain date June 11th\, 10:00 am* \n*Registration limited to 50 people* \n*Event sponsored by the Finger Lakes Land Trust* \nJoin us for a fun day of outdoor exploration at Muller Field Station! Guests are welcome to rotate through several engaging activities including a canoe paddle\, aquatic insect sampling\, and an educational walk along the inlet. Each activity should last about 45 minutes to 1 hour. \nGuests can choose to spend part of their morning canoeing the Honeoye inlet with environmental educators looking for signs and sounds of wildlife. Evidence of beaver and river otter are frequently spotted\, along with many native birds and plants. This paddle is great for beginners\, and all equipment including life jackets will be provided. Feel free to bring binoculars! \nExplore life under the water with a close up view of aquatic insects. Nets\, observation containers\, magnifying glasses\, and identification guides will be available for examining samples from the pond. A laid-back and fun hands-on activity for all ages. \nGuests are also invited to enjoy a walk along the inlet channel. This is a great opportunity to get a closer look at the wetland plant communities that are present\, and also use observational senses to scout for birds and animal sign. DESCRIPTION:Into the Woods with Marty Dodge: Management Options for a Variety of Forest Types  \n*Registration limited to 12 people* \nMarty Dodge\, as our teacher and guide\, will bring participants to observe a number of different forest stands that occur on his land\, and on the land now owned by the Finger Lakes Land Trust that he has managed for 25 years. There are pole stands of red maple and ash that regenerated from sheep pasture\, a red pine stand that he has thinned\, several stands of red oak poles that he has been thinning for 25 years\, and several stands of mature oak hickory forest that have sustained several rounds of commercial cutting will serve to illustrate both needed management and the effects of ongoing forest practices. \nMarty Dodge\, born in New Haven\, CT in 1942 dedicated his childhood to outdoor activities. He earned a BA in Chemistry from Colby College in Waterville\, Maine in 1965. While at Colby he served as president of the Outing Club for two years\, started the Woodsmen’s’ Team at Colby and served as captain and coach of the team for four years. Marty served as a tripping counselor for a boy’s camp in Belgrade\, Maine for the four summers he attended Colby. He enrolled in the United States Coast Guard Officer Training program in Yorktown\, VA and assumed duties as a deck watch officer aboard the USCG Cutter Sedge in Cordova\, Alaska from 1967 through 1970. Marty earned a Master of Forestry degree from Utah State University in 1972. For two summers while in graduate school\, Marty worked for the Cordova District of the US Forest Service maintaining and building cabins and trails in the Chugach National Forest. \nMarty\, now retired\, served as a Professor of Natural Resources at Finger Lakes Community College for 39 years. In 1987\, he conducted his first month long credit bearing travel ecology course through Alaskan Wilderness areas. From 1989 through 2010 he led thirteen more groups of college students into Alaskan National Parks and Forests. For as many as three months through the summers of 2011 to 2014\, Marty designed and supervised the construction of seven buildings a mile south of Wiseman\, Alaska; one of which will serve as a retirement getaway for him in the years to come. \nThroughout his college career\, Marty delivered Alaska presentations to more than one hundred civic groups and has produced dozens of Alaska related video programs\, the latest of which can be viewed on YouTube. SUMMARY:Owasco Nursery Willow Planting Event
DESCRIPTION:This in-person event is part of Lake Friendly Living Awareness Month and is sponsored by Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council\, Owasco Watershed Lake Association\, and SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry. \nA riparian forest buffer is an area adjacent to a stream\, lake\, or wetland that contains a combination of trees\, shrubs\, and/or other perennial plants and is managed to provide conservation benefits. Conservation benefits of riparian buffers include carbon sequestration for reducing the greenhouse gas\, carbon dioxide\, and the settling of sediments and nutrients that might otherwise discharge into waterways. In partnership with SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry and the Owasco Watershed Lake Association\, the Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council is hosting this volunteer community planting event to develop a shrub willow nursery in a vacant lot in the Town of Owasco. DESCRIPTION:This in-person workshop is part of Lake Friendly Living Awareness Month and is sponsored by Cayuga Lake Watershed Network. \nWhen you attend the May 17th Rain Barrel Workshop\, there will be a short presentation on some lake-friendly living tips to manage stormwater around your home. Alaina will have already cleaned and drilled the 55-gallon plastic food-grade barrels for you. She will demonstrate how she prepared them\, and how to assemble them. With assistance from Alaina and others\, you will assemble your own rain barrel and take it home! It is such a fun evening learning about conserving water\, protecting our local lakes\, and making a difference in our environment. \nCost per rain barrel is $20 and can be paid at the CLWN website: https://www.cayugalake.org/volunteer/donate/. Payment must be received prior to the program. \nAlaina Robarge is the Conservation District Educator for the Ontario County Soil & Water Conservation District.
