Now Hiring Watercraft Stewards for 2018 Boating Season!

Our partners at the Finger Lakes Institute are currently accepting applications for watercraft stewards and a steward coordinator to work across the Finger Lakes region. College students or recent graduates with experience in environmental education, natural resources management, biology, ecology, environmental studies/science, or a related field are encouraged to apply. Also a great job for recent retirees that want to spend the summer outdoors! Please forward to friends, family, or neighbors that may be interested.

The watercraft steward program on Canandaigua Lake is a collaboration between the Association, the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Council, and the Finger Lakes Institute with support from NYS Parks and the NYS DEC.

Watercraft Stewards

Job Description: The Watercraft Stewards will be responsible for public outreach and education on slowing and preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species. Under the supervision of Finger Lakes Institute (FLI) at Hobart and William Smith Colleges staff, Watercraft Stewards will offer watercraft inspections to boaters at public launches and provide boaters with information about aquatic invasive species and protocol for preventing their spread. Watercraft inspections entail removing plants and other organic material from boats and trailers and identifying aquatic invasive species. Watercraft Stewards will collect daily data from their interactions with boaters using tablets and electronic data-entry software. Weekly progress reports and data entry will be required that summarize this information. Training will be provided.

Watercraft Steward Coordinator

Job Description: Working under the supervision of Finger Lakes Institute (FLI) staff, Program Coordinators will be responsible for supervising the Finger Lakes Institute’s Watercraft Stewards. Watercraft Stewards will offer watercraft inspections to boaters at public launches throughout the Finger Lakes region and provide boaters with information about aquatic invasive species and protocol for preventing their spread. Watercraft inspections entail removing plants and other organic material from boats and trailers and identifying aquatic invasive species. Watercraft Stewards will collect daily data from their interactions with boaters. Weekly progress reports and data entry will be required that summarize this information. Training will be provided. Specializations include: data management and analysis, AIS taxonomy.
